Men's health doctor consultation

Did you know that men are less likely than women to have visited a doctor in the past year?

Men’s health in Malaysia is often trivialised, glossed over, or reduced to an unrealistic generalisation tied to fitness and physique. But it need not be the case! With medical advances today, many major health risks, like colon cancer or heart disease that men are prone to, can be prevented completely or successfully treated with early diagnosis.

Getting advice on general health matters should be easy and convenient — and that’s what our doctors are trained in.

What Are The Most Common Male Health Conditions?

Just as women are more prone to certain conditions, men, too, are susceptible to specific illnesses.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is unique to men and is one of the leading cause of cancer death in men.

Most cases of prostate cancer are confined to the prostate gland, where they may not cause serious harm. When detected early before it has spread beyond the prostate gland, there is a high chance for successful treatment.

However, there have been cases of aggressive prostate cancer where the cancer progresses and spreads quickly.

Prostate Enlargement

Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH), also called prostate gland enlargement, is a common condition in older men. The enlarged prostate gland interferes with the discharge of urine from the bladder and can eventually cause urinary tract infections. When the bladder is unable to empty and there is a backflow of urine into the kidneys, this will cause increasing pressure to the kidneys directly and eventually leading to failure.

Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation (PE) is characterised by the inability to delay orgasm for more than three minutes. It is a common condition that affects 30% of the global male population. Although not medically serious, PE makes it harder for men to enjoy sex and can be a cause of frustration among couples and breakdown in relationships.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is characterised by the inability to get an erection or sustain one long enough for sexual intercourse. It is normal to experience difficulty getting an erection from time to time. However, when it occurs one too many times, ED could be a symptom of a more seriously underlying disease like diabetes and heart disease.

Low Testosterone Levels

Hypogonadism, or low testosterone levels, can cause a loss in sex drive, poor erections, low sperm count, and enlarged breasts in men. While it is not unusual for older men to experience low testosterone levels, the long term effect can cause osteoporosis, smaller testicles, less energy, and mood changes.

Hair Loss

Male pattern hair loss is characterised by either a receding hairline or a balding spot on the top of the head. Globally, 32% of the male population would have experienced some degree of hair loss before the age of 30.

Hair loss can be associated with hereditary factors, hormonal changes, medical conditions, or simply aging. But it has also been associated with more serious illnesses like prostate cancer and heart disease.

At What Age Should You Consider Health Screening?

Health screening is recommended from when you enter your 20s.

Between your 20s and 30s, opt for a general health screening that covers diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, especially if you have a family history. If you are sexually active, get screened for sexually transmitted diseases too.

In your 40s, start screening for major illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and lung cancer.

In your 50s, the risk of prostate cancer and colorectal cancer increases. It is also likely to develop age-related issues such as eye conditions, erectile dysfunction, and osteoporosis in this age group.

In your 60s, continue with annual check-ups. Try to keep to an active lifestyle to reduce the chances of dementia and depression.

Testosterone plays a vital role in supporting many bodily functions, such as sperm production, a healthy sex drive, mood disorders and maintaining and building muscle mass.

Men with lower than normal testosterone levels tend to experience a lack of motivation and energy, increased hair loss, low sex drive, fatigue and erectile dysfunction. A hormone test will indicate if you have a hormone imbalance.
